Ekta Kapoor is the daughter of Ravi Kapoor, who is an actor recognized by his screen name, Jeetendra, a super star during the 80’s decade. So Ekta and her brother, Tusshar had exposure to the glamour world right from their childhood. While Tushar Kapoor went into movies, Ekta started her career with the scaled down version of media – the television.
In spite of being born in a celebrity’s family, Ekta and Tusshar were brought up in Mumbai as humbly as possible. Ekta went to Bombay (as Mumbai was called at that time) Scottish School in Mahim, and did her graduation from Mithibai College.
Venturing into professional life with her family on her side
Although Ekta was fairly good in academics, the blood of acting and the tinsel town in her veins inclined her towards the media. Jeetendra advised his eldest born, Ekta to try her hand in producing TV serials. She founded Balaji Telefilms jointly with her mother, Shobha Kapoor at the young age of 19 years only.
Later, at the peak of her career, Ekta diversified into filmmaking as well and founded Balaji Motion Pictures Ltd, again with her mother on board. She also tied up with a Bhojpuri banner, Siddhi Vinayak Media Entertainment to produce a couple of Bhojpuri films with big budgets. As a producer, she is known to have launched quite a few young and talented actors and actresses. She even contributed in promoting her brother, Tusshar Kapoor as a popular actor by signing him in some of her films.
Shobha is an extremely media shy person, and lets her daughter handle all the limelight. But she and her husband continue being the support behind their daughter.
Ekta has also launched Alt Entertainment, a banner for producing films that are inclined towards the alternate go of an individual.
Queen of Soap Operas on Television
Ekta shot to fame when her serial, Hum Panch, a family based comedy serial, became extremely popular. It ran for about four years at that time – it commanded so much viewership and brought Ekta Kapoor lot of applause and accolades. Ekta’s serials, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki on Star Plus channel made her a household name. She is known to produce television soap operas, which are family oriented and usually has a female central character. Both these serials ran for years, and the stories crossed generations. Her other famous television flicks include Kasauti Zindagi Kay, Kahin Kissi Roz, Kkusum, Kasamh Se, etc. She became famous for her superstition by naming her productions with the letter K; and also consulting numerologists for playing around with the spellings of the words in the title. Ekta caught the fancy of many a middle class Indian citizen because her stories could identify with the lives of common men and his aspirations. Many spectators watched for various reasons – some for the drama, some for the jewellery, clothes and styling, some for the architecture and interior design of the backdrops, etc. Critics often said that visuals of impeccably dressed women even in the kitchen and after getting up appeared unrealistic. However, it must be said that one may like her serials, or dislike them as the stories appear too melodramatic and long drawn, but one cannot ignore them.
Ekta continues to demand the attention of television serial viewers with her presently running and extremely successful ventures such as Pavitra Rishta, Bade Achchhe Lagte Hain, etc. She seems to have come out of her inclination to use the alphabet K in her ventures.
Her serials have won many awards year after year, and Ekta is known as the “Queen of Soap Operas on Television”.
Trying her hand in films
In 2001, Ekta Kapoor decided to enter into production of films. Some of her popular films that were hits in the box office are Kyun Kii … Main Jhuth Nahi Bolta, Kuchh to Hain, Krishna Cottage etc. One can see her favourite alphabet being used in her other movies too such as Kyaa Kool Hain Hum and its sequel, Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum, both starring her brother. She co-produced Shootout at Lokhandwala starring Vivek Oberoi, Sanjay Dutt and Tusshar Kapoor with Sanjay Gupta; Mission Istanbul and EMI – Liya Hain to Chukana Parega with Suneil Shetty, etc.
Her films, Love Sex aur Dhoka, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, Shor in the City, Ragini MMS did well in the box office. Her film, The Dirty Picture, became a controversial topic of discussion but was very successful. It left no one in doubt about Ekta’s capability in making films.
A chain of movies by Ekta Kapoor are in the pipeline to be released. Ek Thi Daayan, a movie based on super natural forces, has been released just recently.
Ekta has won the Most Successful Woman in 2012 by Gr8 Woman, many Indian television academy awards, filmfare and other awards.
Such success is bound to affect the personal life of an individual, especially when she is a successful young lady in her mid thirties. Ekta denies all speculation about her being in a relationship. Instead, she insists that she is just like a next door girl, and admits being a social media addict. For her updating her status on Facebook is almost equivalent to the joy of making a successful movie!
Ekta has always been in the centre of some controversy or the other, but have not got daunted by them. Her disagreement with Smriti Irani, the lead actress of her successfully running serial, Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, caught media attention and was in discussion for long. Ekta also ran into trouble with the Censor Board when they reviewed her film, the Dirty Picture. Recently, her rude behavior to a senior citizen in a bank in Mumbai brought her lot of negative publicity, inspite of Ekta’s insisting that it was not her fault.
Being a strong woman that she is, Ekta has risen above these matters and looks forward to the future with optimism.
