Fit and Healthy Workforce

"A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools."– Spanish Proverb

For every team you look at, one of the team members seems to be on leave and 80% of these leaves are sick leaves. The workforce is the backbone of an organization and if this dwindles the corporate would come crumbling down. Thus the fitness and health of an employee is no longer personal, given its impact on the organizational health it becomes an important organizational matter.

An employee going through difficult physical condition would suffer from low morale too. Moreover the employee ill health will negatively affect the overall business as absenteeism would lead to low productivity, plummeting team morale, dipping job satisfaction and

Organizations are getting innovative and coming out with some real awesome health and fitness programme. Companies with deep pockets have recreational facilities and gym area for employees. Some have their employee participate in sports and tournaments to keep them motivated.

One such initiative is by Makemytrip, an online travel agency with team strength of about 1300. They have enrolled the entire workforce across different locations for ‘Stepathlon’. It is a program developed to engage organizations big and small across different verticals and countries in the healthy habit of ‘Walking’ for 100 days. It is a fun way to have employee participate to make sure they keep their team ‘walking meter’ average on the high. The team of five picked randomly from all locations keep each other motivated and going. For a healthy lifestyle research recommends daily dose of 10,000 steps. And as we have the employees striving to reach the goal of 10,000 steps, they get into a healthy lifestyle. The organization gets to enjoy the benefits of a healthy workforce while at the same time breeding a culture of team first.

This is just one example of how organizations can help their most valued resource keep a good balance in life. The HR folks can get creative and come up with some brilliant ways to foster health and well being.

“A man’s health can be judged by which he takes two at a time – pills or stairs.”
