Affirmative Actions in India

Affirmative Actions
Affirmative action implies a plan of action adopted by an individual or social group to support access to employment or education targeted at a socio-politically non-dominant group such as, minorities or women. An affirmative action policy is to correct the effects of past prejudice, biases and to further public institutions such as colleges, organizations, and other government organizations or PSU to be more representative of the population.

Results of Affirmative Actions can be achieved by staffing programs, other admission programs and through quotas, in which socio-politically minority groups are given preference over the other applicants. People who oppose affirmative action policies reason that affirmative action gives
importance to human interdependence rather than the separate individuals, which in turn, results in denying the qualified candidates to employment and higher education because they belong to majority group.

Vindications
In India, the term used for affirmative actions is Reservations. According to vindicators, the affirmative action is the best policy is to remove unjust decision making because past discrimination has critically created barriers for minority class people to access educational and employment opportunities. Secondly, irrespective of the explicit values and beliefs, people having authority are likely to employ people they already acquainted with or people from similar backgrounds, or both. Thirdly, apparent measures of "worth" may well be influenced toward the identical groups who are already in majority.

People targeted for affirmative action come under the category of minority, SC/ST, race, gender, or disability status which leads to discrimination. The reason given by vindicators is that that it is necessary to balance for the advantage that is given to other majority groups. Vindicators also say that Affirmative Action assures that, the finest applicant is chosen because affirmative action steadily includes persons from groups that are otherwise systematically excluded. Therefore, choosing applicants from the excluded group yields maximum number of competent individuals.

Antagonists
People who oppose affirmative action argues that affirmative action can lead to discrimination because it promotes chauvinism by growing bitterness of those who are the beneficiaries of affirmative action from those who have been badly affected by the policy. Secondly, people also argue that those who do not get job or those who are affected by affirmative actions should not be held responsible for offences they did not make. That is, the applicants were no there when the system demoralized the minority class. Thirdly, all people have equal rights, and nobody’s right should be detracted to balance for another person's rights being taken away.

Furthermore, it is contended that affirmative action sometimes suppresses the competent in support of the not-so-competent, which in turn, can result in a loss for a country not functioning at its full capability and can also leads to unwanted effects felt by those who were discriminated against. As an example, an applicant may be very capable for a particular job, but may be rejected in support of an individual who is less capable but is targeted for affirmative action in that particular job. If taking place on a large scale, the nation will lose momentum in its advances. Each of those qualified applicant turned down will be suppressed and their example might lower down the morale of those like them.

Voluntary Affirmative Actions
In India, Private organizations in India are now marking full consciousness to the corporate responsibility. Government of India is already encouraging affirmative actions in the form of Reservations i.e. quota system. But recently only, private organizations have begun taking action towards voluntary affirmative action. Taking affirmative actions in India is difficult because people here confound affirmative actions and reservations and carries a negative outlook towards the later. After seeing the recent repercussion on reservations, the private sector can expect similar consequences of affirmative actions.

In addition to that, Indian organizations do not have policies and procedures to handle affirmative actions. Therefore, carrying out voluntary affirmative action will adversely affect Indian organizations. Thus, it plays a very crucial role to understand how people interpret and react to different cultures.
