The entertainment and media industry is one of the most versatile industries. It involves professionals from various walks of life. Hence, job scope with the industry is also wide.

One can easily find his/her talent getting recognized in a niche sector within the industry. Following are some of the career options available in the entertainment and media (E&M) industry.

  • Broadcast Engineer: Broadcasting engineering is a branch of electrical engineering and to some extent it involves computer engineering as well. The broadcasting engineer is responsible for,

    • Repairing hardware
    Broadcast engineers work along side producers, studio managers and other technical stuffs. Often broadcast engineers are required to work in team that involves junior and senior technicians.

  • Film/video editor: Film editing is one of the most crucial post production works of film making. The film or video editor is responsible for assembling the raw materials, such as- camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphics, special effects etc. to produce the final product.
     
  • Lighting technician, broadcasting/film/video: Lighting technicians are responsible for controlling electric lighting in movies, stage shows, art exhibitions and the like.Lighting technicians often begin their career as apprentice and work under the master electrician. Light technicians are responsible for rigging and mounting lights to create desired atmosphere.
  • Location manager: The location managers are often responsible for finding exotic locations that are shown is various programs. He will be responsible for finding and organizing filming and photo shoots at various locations outside the studio. He will also be responsible for arranging logistics at the location to help in production.
  • Program researcher, broadcasting/film/video: Program researchers’ deals with the creative part of the production by bringing in fresh ideas for new programs.
    The job of the program researcher involves organizing, planning and researching about everything that can interfere with the production process.
  • Radio broadcast assistant: The Radio broadcast assistant is involved in the process of daily production of programs. The role of the assistant may include,

  • Radio producer: The radio producers are involved in the entire process of radio broadcasting. They are responsible for creating the audio content that will be broadcasted. From conceptualizing a program to successfully airing it the radio producer remains the main driving force.
  • Runner, broadcasting/film/video: If someone wants to join the media industry at the entry level the profile of runners are offered to them the runners normally work as the assistant and undertake the chores that are involved with productions.
  • Sound technician, broadcasting/film/video: The technicians are responsible for creating noise free sound for the production. They are the people responsible for assembling, maintaining and operating instruments necessary for sound recording.
    Sound technicians are demanded in wide range of industries like-film, radio, television etc.
  • Television camera operator: Television camera operators enjoy great demand in various sectors of television and film making. They are responsible for operating and managing digital, electronic and film cameras and might have to work on single or multi-camera environment.
  • Television/film/video producer: The producers are the backbone of the media industry. They are involved in the entire process- from conceptualizing to completion of the program. Their profile may also demand them to be involved with the post-production marketing and distribution of the project.
  • Television floor manager: The profile of the television floor manager involves,
    • Maintaining and managing all the equipments required for the production in usable condition.
    • Managing props required for scenes and ensuring sync between the set and the scene.
    • Referring to floor plans.
    • Managing guests and audiences and making proper seating arrangement.
    • Passing cues and dialogues to the presenters so that timings are met and the production process goes uninterrupted.
    • Arranging rehearsals for live shows.
    • Relaying and communicating the instructions of the director to the floor.
    • Managing the program schedule, anticipating changes and arranging for alternative solutions.
    • Arranging runners and make best use of available studio time and resources.
  • Television production assistant: The television production assistant is responsible for the administrative and secretarial works involved in the production process of the television program. The typical profile of a television production assistant involves,
    • Participating in production meetings.
    • Editing and making copies of the script and distributing it.
    • Making travel arrangements for the members of the production team.
    • Making lodging arrangement for the cast and crew members of the production team.
    • Running errands for the office, director and even cast members.
