CAS / DTH

The Government of India has made the use of conditional access system (CAS) and direct-to-home (DTH) mandatory in Indian metros 1st January 2007. The implementation is taking place area wise in phases. CAS is already operational in Chennai since September 2003. CAS and DTH are platforms that can access and channelize television signals. Through CAS, the consumers can choose the channels they watch and the pay TV channels are routed through a digital set top box. The CAS has been declared mandatory in metros. DTH is the system through which the consumers get digital transmission direct-to-home. DTH substantially improves the quality of transmission.
A Set-Top Box (STB) has a very simple function to receive the signals from cable TV channels and convert them to video signals of appropriate wavelengths which can be seen using a regular TV. Thanks to this function, a set-top box is also called converter box. Thus, only the customer who subscribes to the channel can view the channel. Many companies like Videocon, IndusInd Media & Communications Limited (IMCL) have launched set top boxes with their brands. The two fundamental kinds of STBs that are available are analog STBs and digital STBs costing between Rs 3,000-3,500 and 5,500 to 7,000 respectively.

There are approximately 1.7 million subscribers of DTH in India and they are expected to increase to 2.5 million till 2010. The number of DTH operators and the subscribers are increasing substantially. Dish TV alone claims to have added 1-1.5 lakh subscribers. The shortage in the availability of the set top boxes has lead to a competition between the CAS and DTH operators. Both are trying to lure each others' customers.

CAS has many benefits both for the subscribers and the broadcasters. Subscribers can now choose the channels they want to watch and pay only for them, thus reducing their monthly bill. And it will help the broadcasters to know the actual number of subscribers to their channels, which is sometimes not correctly described by the cable operators.
