in India has undergone sea changes to emerge as one of the most potential players in the global entertainment industry.

The media industry in India has a colorful past but the present as well as the future trends of the industry are equally promising. The industry in the current years has shown tremendous growth rates. According to the ITP Division of the Government of India the media industry of India has registered growth volume of US $12.9 billion and US $14.4 billion in 2009 and 2010 respectively, which indicates a growth rate of 11% in 2010 over 2009. It is expected to grow by 13% in 2011 and earn a business volume of US$ 16.2 billion.

Further projections show that the industry is expected to register a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% to grow into an industry of US$ 28.1 billion by 2015. Following are certain statistics which have come up during the study of the industry show magnificent years ahead for the E&M sector.

  • After the slow year of 2008 the industry rebounded by registering a double digit growth rate during 2010.
  • The growth trend is likely to continue in the current year as well.
  • The expected CAGR of the industry for the period 2009-13 is expected to be 10.5%.
  • The television industry is likely to remain the main driving force towards the performance of the E&M industry. The average growth rate has been estimated at 16%.
  • The Film industry is expected to register a CAGR of 9.6% in 2014.
  • The print media may experience a growth of 5.6% for the period of 2009-13.
  • The radio industry may experience a CAGR of about 20% to become a US$ 0.44 billion industry.

The prolific growth of the industry is said to have been empowered by the sympathetic approach of the government towards foreign investment in E&M sector. As a result the E&M industry is likely to emerge as the major employment generator in the coming days.

During 2008 the Indian media industry too had suffered because of the economic crunch that had upset the global economy. There had been downsizing and layoffs since many of the media companies, predominated by the print media houses, went bankrupt. However, since then the situation has improved and for the time being the market is likely to perform steadily. Growth can be expected at the niche industry of DTH, digital infomedia, digital music interfaces and digital media advertising. Graduates are likely to find demands in developing content for television and cinema, ad content development, newscasting, reporting, journalism, columnist and the like.

Another sector that is going to experience phenomenal growth is the online media. The increased penetration of internet has promoted demand for online information and hence, demands for content developers, editors for websites and e-magazines have gone up manifold.
