It is with the advent of call centers and Business Process Outsourcing units that India managed to become a bigger name globally. The main reason behind India becoming a favorite outsourcing hub was the large-scale availability of intelligent, talented English speaking work force who were ready to work at cost-effective prices. According to a survey conducted by Nasscom, India's call center industry accounts for a quarter of all software and services exports from the country. The main advantage of call centers in India is that it has opened up several job opportunities for the people in India. And lakhs of youth in India are already associated with the call center industry.
But there are some disadvantages also associated with it. Actually, call center jobs in India call for a lot of odd working hours and this in turn is making people lead a topsy-turvy life. Another concern, according to Yale Global online magazine, is that the call-center industry in India requires English-speaking University graduates to answer questions from US customers but offers little in the way of advancement and intellectual stimulation. And the rapid expansion of these call centers may soon create a shortage of these qualified English-speaking graduate colleges in India, pushing wages up and reducing India's competitiveness as one of the premier destinations for company call-centers.
