Eligibility
Students must possess a postgraduate degree. A doctoral degree always comes in handy. Every year the University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET) twice. The successful candidates are eligible to apply for the Junior Research Fellowship and entry as a lecturer.
NET is conducted for the following subjects:
- Social Sciences
- Humanities and Languages
- Computer Science
- Forensic Science
- Environmental Sciences
- Applications and Electronic Science
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in association with the UGC, conducts the UGC_CSIR NET exam for various other science subjects, such as:
- Physical Sciences
- Life Sciences
- Chemical Sciences
- Mathematical Sciences
- Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary Sciences
The test is conducted in the months of June and December. The relevant announcements are made in Employment News respectively in March and September.
The UGC maintains a high standard to filter the best among the prospective entrants. Only five percent of total applicants are able to crack the NET each year.
For entry to different state-level colleges, the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) is conducted in the following states:
- West Bengal
- Andhra Pradesh
- Tamil Nadu
- Uttar Pradesh
- Madhya Pradesh
- Maharashtra and Goa
- Gujarat
- Himachal Pradesh
- Rajasthan
- North Eastern States
The successful candidates are eligible for lectureship in that state only.
Remuneration
At the entry level, government colleges pay Rs.8000 as basic salary. In other colleges, lecturers start with a salary of Rs.6500-10500. Senior lecturers are paid around Rs.8000-13500. The professors are entitled to a pay scale of Rs.12400-22400.
