Resume Writing

As each individual is different from the other, the resume needs to be different from one another. Each human being is different in his own way from the other, with potentials to accomplish one or the other goal. The uniqueness in your resume indicates your own uniqueness from the other individual.

With job seeking population is increasing day by day and job opportunities are not increasing at par, the duty of a recruiter becomes mechanical in short-listing resumes. You may be a candidate with good engineering and analytical skills, but it is your duty to sell your skills to the recruiter. With reasonable understanding and effort, you can write a resume that makes you stand out as a suitable candidate among many applicants.
Very few candidates understand this fact while they create their resume. There is no grapevine method for mentoring you resume making tips. Resume format may be chosen according to the profile of the candidate and profile of the job applied for, and there are variations from country to country. Resume is a kind of marketing tool of oneself. It may vary according to your situation and do exactly what you want it to do.

What is a resume?
These tips are especially for people looking for a job in India where recruitment and job hunting are based on stringent rules where a mixture of conservative practices and modern techniques are followed. To a large extend you are judged by norms such as the educational institutions you have attended, your academic score card and geographical considerations. Still you have a lot of scope for active personal marketing.

A resume is a self-promotional document that presents you in the best possible light, for the purpose of getting invited to a job interview. It is not a description of your past jobs alone. It's about you, your personality, and how you performed and what you accomplished in your past jobs. The accomplishments that are most relevant to the work you want to do next should be emphasized. A good resume can speak to a prospective employer how you might perform in that desired future job.

Career Objective: If you don't show a sense of direction, employers won't be interested. A clearly stated goal could help your resume impress a recruiter for that reason alone. Avoid lack of clarity in your objective statement.

Resume Format: The Chronological format is preferred by employers, and works well if you are staying in the same field, especially when you have been upwardly mobile. Only use a Functional format if you're changing fields, and you're sure a skills-oriented format would show off your transferable skills to better advantage; and be sure to include a clear chronological work history

Academic degrees & achievements: You should be precise while describing your academic background. It is better to list your relevant academic degrees in the chronology of their importance to the job you are applying. It is mandatory to mention the year of passing and percentage too.

If you don't have any work experience then only highlight your achievements in your academic career. Highlight your awards, merit certificates and extra curricular achievements like literature, arts & sports.

Gap in employment: If there is a gap in your employment, tell what you were doing, as gracefully as possible--rather than leave a gap. If you were doing anything valuable (even if unpaid) during those gap period you could just insert that into the work-history section of your resume to fill the gap. Ensure to make such entries very brief and in specific sentences.

But don't drop a job, even when it lasted a short time, if that was where you acquired important skills or experience.
