What are the benefits given to the Assistant Professor?

The respect and inspiration attached to the position of Professor can never be disregarded. The remuneration in terms of salary and other benefits offered to Assistant Professors is very attractive. As per the UGC guidelines following are the benefits extended to an individual at the level of Assistant Professor:
Allowances:
House rent Allowance- It ranges from 10-30% of basic salary; the categorization is done on the basis of the city of residence.
Transport Allowance-One is entitled for Rs 1600-3200/- plus DA per month. The deciding factor again is to be the city of employment.
Children’ Education Allowance-Entitlement for per child upto two chills would be around Rs. 1000/-. In cases where the children are in hostel the amount would be Rs. 3000/-.
Academic Allowance- An amount of Rs 1500/- per month is extended.
Research Promotion Grant- The commission has recommended that new entrants should be given one time start up seed money of Rs. 2 Lacs and Rs 5 Lacs for humanities/social sciences and sciences respectively as financial support for carrying out research against duly approved projects.
Special Compensatory (Hill Area and Remote Locality) Allowance- To attract teachers to work in hill areas and remote areas a special compensation is granted.
Special Allowance for serving in North Eastern Region(including Sikkim and Ladakh)-This is to be 12.5% on pay plus grade pay.
Deputation Allowance- A provision for special allowance has been created for local and outstation deputation
Leave Travel Concession (LTC)-For travel to Home Town three times in a four year block.
Travelling Allowance-similar to the benefit extended to employees of central government above a certain grade, teachers too at corresponding grade are entitled.
Medical Insurance- Of the total premium only 30% is contributed by the Assistant Professor.
Group Insurance- Wherein the employee makes partial contribution.
Consultancy- Teachers are encouraged to accept consultancy, directing projects, registering patents, R&D products and technology transfers. The earned resources would be

Money Received upto 30% of gross salary- No Sharing

Money received beyond 30% and upto the gross salary- 70% with Teacher and 30% with the institution

Monet Received beyond gross salary- 50% with Teacher and 50% with the institution
Pension- The Assistant Professor would be entitled to pension as well after retirement.
Reemployment- Teachers may be reemployed selectively on contract basis after superannuation.
Provident Fund- As per government norms teachers are to be a part of the contributory provident Fund.
Gratuity-After completion of 5years of continuos service one becomes entitled to gratuity. The upper limit of which is capped at 10 lacs.
Ex-Gratia Lump sum compensation in case of Death on Duty- Death occurring due to accident or due to violence by terrorists/anti social elements in the course of performance of duties.
Other then the above mentioned benefits, an Assistant Professor might also be entitled to allowance for academic Books/CD/DVD, Stationary, Subscription fee for membership of professional societies. The expenditure of attending conferences, seminars workshops etc are wholly or partially reimbursed.

Is the salary paid in dollars taxable?
A)
Salary earned for rendering services in India is taxable in India irrespective of the currency of payment.
In cases where the individual goes abroad for employment and is paid in dollars, it is taxable in India based on the residential status of the individual during that previous year. However, credit against any tax paid on the income earned outside India is available against the total tax liability on income earned within India or from outside India.
The norms deciding on Residential Status
-
Resident Ordinarily Residents-Under this category, a person who during the financial year (April to March) satisfies any one of the following two basic conditions:
(i) He is in India for at least 182 days in the financial year
(ii) He is in India for at least 60 days in the financial year and his total stay in India for last four preceding previous years is 365 days or more. -
Resident but not Ordinarily Residents- An individual who satisfies either of the conditions mentioned above(ROR) and also the following conditions -
(i) He has been non-resident in India in 9 out of 10 years preceding the relevant previous year; or,
(ii) He is in India for 729 days or less during 7 previous years preceding the relevant previous year.
Not residents are taxable in relation to income received in India or income accrued or deemed to be accrue or arise in India and income from business or profession controlled from India. -
Non Residents-Non Residents are exempt from tax if income accrue or arise or deemed to be accrued or arise outside India. However their income is Taxable in India if it is earned from business or profession carried out from India or from any asset situated in India.
