About IRS

IRS is categorised as a ‘Group A’ Central Civil Service along with other important civil services groupings like Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, and Indian Foreign Service and so on. Fresh recruitments for different positions in IRS are done via the civil services examinations conducted by UPSC. Apart from direct recruitments, selections for higher hierarchical positions are executed through promotions.


It takes several years to get promoted from one position to the next at every stage. Ideally, one joins as an assistant commissioner and retires as an executive member or chairman of CBDT or CBEC. After qualifying in the relevant examination, a selected candidate has to undergo training in two integrated phases. In the first stage, training is provided at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie that lasts for 3 months. This training is common for all candidates selected for both the IRS streams.

Thereafter, the candidates who have qualified for CBEC positions have to undergo professional training at National Institute of Financial Management (Faridabad) for a period of 15 months. The CBDT candidates are groomed at National Academy of Direct Taxes at Nagpur. The candidate will have to clear a test after completion of training. Additionally, the recruits will have to pass the respective departmental examinations during their probationary period.

The conscripts receive a stipend during the training phase. After they complete one year of employment, they receive a basic salary of 8275 INR. After passing their initial departmental exam, their salaries are raised by an amount of 275 INR to 8550 INR. The next increment happens after their appointment is confirmed which is usually done after they complete 3 years in service.
