About South Korea

South Korea is referred to in the Korean language Daehan Min-guk meaning Great Han People’s Nation. South Korea, which is officially known, as the Republic of Korea is an East Asian State that is situated at the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is divided into four regions and they are the eastern region of the high mountain ranges, western region that features the coastal plains and rolling hills, southwestern region that is characterized by mountains and valleys and another southeastern region that includes the basin of the Nakdong River.

In the year 1945, Soviet Union as well as the United States established their hold over the southern as well as northern half of Korea and
the two rivals of Cold War managed to win the sympathy of the government as the government approved their vision and this resulted in the disintegration of Korea into North Korea and South Korea and it also led to the set up of two governments, the capitalist South and the communist North.   • Economy- The economy of South Korea is the 12th largest economy of the world and the third largest economy of Asia and it is to be noted here that its largest market as far as the exports are concerned as well as its trading partner is China. The economy of South Korea is also characterized by relatively low unemployment; almost fair distribution of income and surplus of export.

  • Foreign Relations: South Korea maintains a strong relationship with Korea as well as with its neighboring countries that includes China, Japan and Russia. It also shares a strong bond with the United States.

  • Millitary – The South Korean Millitary comprises of the Republic of Korea Air Force, Republic of Korea Navy, Republic of Korea Army and the Republic of Korea Marine Corps.

  • Culture - The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of South Korea promotes traditional arts and also encourages modern art forms with the aid of educational programnes and funding.

  • Sports – The residents of South Korea love to indulge themselves with various kinds of sports such as baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey, tennis and golf. In the year 1998, South Korea hosted the Seoul Summer Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup was hosted jointly by Japan and South Korea.

  • Transportation – The transportation of South Korea is backed up by a well- built railway network, highways, air routes, ferry routes as well as ferry services and bus routes and therefore it makes easy for the locals to get to one place from another.
