The western part of the country facing the Asian continent is influenced by the winter monsoon, whereas the eastern part is safeguarded from such harsh wintry climate due to the location of the T'aebaeksan mountain range. South Korea is affected by occasional typhoons in between June to September. The average annual temperature in South Korea varies from 10 degrees C to 16 degrees C except in the hilly regions. The highest temperature ranging from 20 degrees C to 26 degrees C has been recorded in the month of August. January has been recorded as the coldest month coldest month with the temperature varying from -5 degrees C to 5 degrees C. Icy winds from Siberia blow during this time period. Temperatures of all season are somewhat lower than those at the corresponding latitudes in other continents, such as North America or Western Europe. The cold dry winter facilitates spectacular winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and snowmobile. Light cotton clothes and linens are ideal to wear in summer, whereas medium weights can be worn in spring and autumn. Woolen garments are advised to wear during the winter.
