South Korea is a democratic republic with a presidential representative. Politics of South Korea consists of a plural multi part system where the President acts as the head of the state. The president is elected for a single five-year term through direct vote. The Prime Minister of South Korea is appointed by the President with the approval of the National Assembly. Politics of South Korea is something unique and distinct. The National Assembly represents five political parties in South Korea. They are Uri Party, Grand National Party, Democratic Labor

Party, Democratic Party and People First Party. Uri Party is the most popular left wing party of South Korea. Led by the President Roh Moo-hyun the party shared a majority in the election. The party strengths are the young people from the Jeolla region. This party supports the ideology of left Democratic Party. The Uri Party favors militant labor unions, teachers' unions and the lower income groups. The party is known for its ideology of class struggle that emphasizes on income disparities, and differential wage values. The party also supports civic groups that support the government policy of North Korea.
Grand National Party headed by Kang Jae Seob is marked for its conservative ideologies. With a host of conservative supporters from the elite group the part is the biggest opposition party in the National Assembly with its huge the opposition camp. The conservative supporters of the party are from the rural areas and the Gyeongsang region. The party supported the impeachment of president Roh. It won the majority vote in North Gyeongsang and South Gyeongsang regions. Some of the encouraging activities of the party are its support for entrepreneurship, free trade, capitalism, economic development, tax reductions and strategic alliance with the well-developed western countries. Once the Parliamnet's minority party Grand National Party today enjoys the highest support from amongst other parties.
Democratic Labour Party headed by Moon Sung-Hyun is a democratic socialist party. The party has a support base mostly from the underdeveloped sectors like farmers, factory workers, shopkeepers and labors. Democratic Party headed by Han Hwa-gap is a popular liberal party of South Korea. The party has a majority support from the Jeolla province. Its political ideology is to the left of the Grand National Party and to the right of the Uri Party. It was the second-largest party prior to the election, but suffered a great loss for its support for the impeachment of president Roh. People First Party guided by Sim Dae-pyung and Shin Kook-hwan is basically a conservative party with its supporters from Chungcheong.
