The company was formed in 1998 after a merger between Coopers & Lybrand and Price Waterhouse. The acronym PwC was adopted in 2010 during the rebranding effort. Dennis Nally is currently the chairman of PwC.

The network of member firms of PwC works under the brand name of PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited or PwCIL. These member firms maintain their separate legal identities and do not work as a representative of the PwCIL brand.
