Growth of the Pharmaceutical Sector
The Indian pharmaceutical industry, which is now meeting over 95% of the country’s pharmaceutical needs, was almost non-existent before 1970. It has come a long way. With the compound annual growth of 19.8% per annum, the industry has grown from Rs.4bn in 1970 to Rs.214bn in 2002.
But the overall value growth of the Indian domestic pharmaceutical market has been negatively affected by increased generic penetration, compelling competition and industry fragmentation. Under these circumstances, companies started introducing value added innovative products, resourcefulness, product life cycle management and increased market research.
