Chicago was known as the "Urbs in Horto", a Latin phrase for "City in a Garden" when it was incorporated as a city in 1837. The Chicago Park District now boasts of 552 parks, 33 beaches, 16 historic lagoons and 10 bird and wildlife gardens. Horticulture is treated as a serious profession in Chicago. Some of the major employment providers in the horticulture business are Chicago Botanic Garden, Chromatin and Ball Horticulture Company.
